6 Free Mac Games You Should Play!
Free and Fun Games on Mac; They Do Exist!
Looking for good Mac games without the price? Then try totally free Mac shooting games like UberStrike and Nexuiz, down to classic Apple II games like Oregon Trail? Don’t worry, this free game list doesn’t contain any of those lame, generic, flash games — these are high quality Mac games, most are full length, and have active communities of other gamers! PC gamers don’t feel left out; most of the free Mac games below work for Windows too.
What Do I Need to Play Games on my Mac?
I use Apple’s 15 inch Mac Book Pro for my Mac gaming. Other than the laptop itself, the free games in this article work without any other requirements (they do not require Bootcamp, WINE, etc). I’ve also played Mac games such as Portal at high settings without many framerate issues, and games do look beautiful on that glossy screen.
I recommend using an external keyboard and mouse for better control while playing games. Also enhance your Mac gaming experience when you connect your Mac Book Pro to the TV!
Free Games For Mac
1.) UberStrike HD
UberStrike HD is a free download from the Mac App Store or Facebook. Add my player name "Skush" to your UberStrike friend-list!
UberStrike HD is a free Mac shooting game with simple, fast-action gameplay! With only shoot, aim, secondary function and jump controls, almost anyone can learn to play easily. UberStrike HD has Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch modes and kills and leveling gives you points towards upgrading your gear, weapons and more. This first person shooter is very arcade-like, so don’t expect a free Battlefield or Call of Duty game, but expect some super fast-paced action and a lot of fun. If you want a challenge, play on the Asian servers (they kicked my butt!). UberStrike HD is available for download via the Mac App Store or via Facebook.

2.) Nexuiz (Classic)
Nexuiz has a variety of maps and modes to play, such as Deathmatch and features lots of blood and gore!
Classic Nexuiz is another free mac shooting game and if you’re a fan of the classics, Wolfenstein, Doom or Quake, you’ll enjoy this! The gameplay is extremely fast-paced (more than UberStrike); but still a lot of fun if you dare to handle it! Plus, watching your opponents blow up into bloody chunks after hitting them with a rocket is always rewarding. The classic version of Nexuiz is completely free to play, and mod, and so set your download of Nexuiz to run as you read the rest of this article — the zipped file is 888MB thanks to the high-res graphics.

3.) Neverball
If shooters aren’t your cup of tea, then check out Neverball! A fun puzzle game for Mac, Neverball will either fascinate you or frustrate you. The controls are simple: make the Neverball roll by using the mouse to move the ground. This allows you to collect coins and navigate obstacles. While the levels start out easy and become really tricky; the game is fun nonetheless. Your fun factor may depend on your patience; the reward being a beautiful game with great music. I cranked this game up to 1080p on my 32″ VIZIO LCD TV and it looked amazing! Neverball definitely sits in high in my list of the best free Mac games.
4.) VirtualApple.org
“Almost every Apple II and Apple IIgs game ever made, ready to play in your browser.”
- Virtual Apple
Virtual Apple is one of my favorite Apple gaming websites; most likely because my first computer was an Apple II/c. Downloading VirtualApple’s browser plugin gets you back to the classic Apple II and Apple IIgs games like Ultima 1 – 5 and my personal favorite, Oregon Trail. Have fun playing all those old Apple II games you wish you had!

5.) World of Warcraft
Of course World of Warcraft (WoW) is on this list! Why? Well as an off-and-on WoW player since 2005, I love the idea of being able to create a free account and level up as many toons (characters) as I see fit. World of Warcraft’s easy in-game interface, quests, dungeons, pvp and lore are the primary reason there’s over 10 million players today. I’m sure a chunk of those players are gaming on the MacBook Pro also! With levels 0 – 20 now available for free, WoW is the premier online game for Mac and PC.

6.) Second Life
Second Life (SL) is pretty self-explanatory: you create an avatar, buy your own land, and interact with thousands of other SL residents. Unlike World of Warcraft, you can completely customize your avatar as well as legitimately sell in-game items for real-world profit. If you’re looking for a game to get completely addicted to, create a free Second Life account!

It ain't easy being cheesy... or something like that. I'm a Cali-born gamer, writer, artist, programmer and can be found playing games on Xbox 360, Wii, DS or the computer. My first name should be "nerd" since I've been called that all my life. I like free things, especially food and games.
